Gerry Cinnamon Facts
- In his early teenage years, Gerry had faced bullying in school and due to this, his father had sent him to London for some time where he used to live with a friend of his father’s. During this time, he had learned how to play the guitar and had also become adept at playing the harmonica.
- Upon his return to Scotland, he had started writing songs and this blooming interest in music had proved to be a distraction in his attempt to hold down a stable job, over several years.
- Around this time, while performing a solo gig at a college, he had made an acquaintance with an aspiring producer named Chris Marshall. They soon began collaborating on a casual basis and had eventually formed a lo-fi band, The Cinnamons. With Chris arranging the songs and Gerry working as the lyricist and frontman, the band had released a five-song EP in 2010.
- In 2014, as his popularity rose by word of mouth and social media, he had been invited to write and perform a song at a rally event that was held ahead of the referendum on Scottish independence. He had written a song titled Hope Over Fear for the occasion and it had helped him get noticed by a much wider audience. The song was later released as a single but he had stated that he did not wish to become a figurehead for Yes Scotland, the organization that was representing the parties, organizations, and individuals who were campaigning for a ‘Yes’ vote in the 2014 Scottish independence referendum.
- In 2017, after the release of his debut solo studio album, he had announced a December 2017 show at Barrowland Ballroom, a popular dance hall and music venue in Glasgow. The tickets were sold out within hours of being released and then a 2nd date that was announced was sold out even quicker. This was the first time that an unsigned artist had achieved such a feat for this venue. To recognize this, he was later inducted into the ‘Barrowland Hall of Fame’.
