  1. Jorge Arantes (1992-1994) – Rowling met television journalist Jorge Arantes in a bar in Porto. They had a mutual passion for Jane Austen’s work, which eventually brought them close. In October 1992, they got married in a small ceremony. In July 1993, she gave birth to a girl, Jessica Isabel Rowling Arantes. Rowling had endured a miscarriage before the birth of her daughter. In November 1993, they separated and it was later reported that she had endured domestic abuse in course of her marriage.   1. She wrote her first short story, titled Rabbit, at the age of 6. She gave it to her mother to read it and after getting a compliment for her work, she got the thought of getting it published.
  2. Her debut novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, was rejected by 12 publishing houses before Bloomsbury decided to take a gamble on her.
  3. Bloomsbury Publications decided to publish her book after 8-year-old Alice Newton, who was the daughter of publication’s chairman got hooked to it after reading the first chapter.
  4. Rowling adopted ‘J.K.’ pen name after the publishing house advised her to go for an ambiguous name as they felt a fantasy story written by female author won’t attract many readers.
  5. During her struggling days, she was diagnosed with clinical depression and even thought about committing suicide. She also suffered from insomnia.
  6. After seeing an advertisement for English language teacher in The Guardian newspaper, she moved to Porto, Portugal. She used to write during the day and take language classes in the night.
  7. She wrote her first novel entirely on a typewriter at the various street cafes in Edinburgh. She was often accompanied by her infant daughter.
