- His parents separated after he was born and his surname was changed to Flanigan after he was adopted by his stepfather John Flanigan. At the age of 6, his family relocated to a small ranch near Reno, Nevada, United States.
- At the age of 14, he attended a boarding school situated in Ojai, California, where he made appearances in the school production of A Streetcar Named Desire.
- Influenced by a friend, he took up acting classes to conquer shyness but wasn’t really planning to be in pursuits of acting. After his graduation, he pursued a career in writing instead and later worked on Capitol Hill. He also worked for different New York City publications like Town & Country and Interview magazine.
- In 1994, he finally decided to pursue a career in acting after returning from Neighborhood Playhouse where he was coached by Gerald Gordon.
- He acquired numerous guest roles on various television series including Profiler, First Monday, and Sisters. After ticking off quite a couple of guest roles from his plate as a newbie in the acting industry, he finally got his biggest breakthrough after landing the role of Lt. Colonel John Sheppard on Stargate Atlantis. He was residing in Vancouver, Canada where the filming took place during the week and then to Los Angeles on weekends where his wife and kids lived.
- He has appeared in Brooks Institute photographer, John A. Russo’s book About Face in which a portion of the proceeds was donated to Smile Train.
- In 2019, he was cast to join General Hospital to play a recurring character as Dr. Neil Byrne.
- Artist Martin Firrell featured Flanigan on his contemporary public artwork Metascifi (2015). The project features popular characters from Stargate, Star Trek, Farscape, Firefly, and Warehouse 13.
- He brought home 2 prizes in the Waterkeepers’ Alliance downhill skiing competition at Lake Louise in January 2006 during which fellow Stargate lead Richard Dean Anderson was also present.
- On November 10, 2018, his Malibu home that he was renting from a local family was destroyed in the Woolsey Fire.
