Eddie Albert Facts

  1. His mother had changed the birth year in his birth certificate to 1908 to cover up the fact that he was born out of wedlock. However, it was the actor’s son, Edward Albert Jr. who confirmed that he was born in 1906.
  2. He had participated in the deadly Battle of Tarawa in November 1943 during the height of World War II. Albert was instrumental in rescuing close to 70 wounded marines while facing heavy machine-gun fire from the enemy. For his exceptional bravery, he received the Bronze Star with a combat “V”.
  3. Among his close friends were Tom Lester, Eva Gabor, Robert Wagner, Gregory Peck, Morgan Fairchild, Shirley Jones, Jane Wyman, Sharon Gless, Ann Sother, Burt Reynolds, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, and many others.
  4. He was taunted as ‘the enemy’ in elementary school for having a German surname during World War I.
  5. Several years later, he replaced his last name with his middle name and became known professionally as ‘Eddie Albert’ since his last name was routinely mispronounced as ‘Hamburger’.
  6. He had starred in 2 films that were nominated for ‘Best Picture’ Oscars: Roman Holiday (1953) and The Longest Day (1962).
  7. In spite of earning Oscar nominations for his performances in both Roman Holiday (1953) and The Heartbreak Kid (1972), Eddie wasn’t a fan of these movies.
  8. He was an avid environmentalist throughout his life. Eddie spoke about the issue extensively during his appearances on talk shows like The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Incidentally, the very first ‘Earth Day’ was celebrated on April 22, 1970, and fell on his 64th birthday.
