Julio Urías Facts

  2. He was 14 years old when he met Los Angeles Dodgers scout Mike Brito. Mike was the one who had first scouted Fernando Valenzuela in the late 1970s.
  3. At a showcase in Oaxaca, Julio Urías was discovered by the Los Angeles Dodgers at the age of 15. It was the same scouting trip in Mexico on which the team signed Yasiel Puig.
  4. It was his 16th birthday when he was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 12, paying a signing fee of US$450,000, most of which went to the Diablos Rojos del México of the Mexican League.
  5. On May 25, 2013, he made his professional debut for the Great Lakes Loons in the Midwest League as the youngest player in the league.
  6. He made it to play the World team at the 2014 All-Star Futures Game as well as was selected as the Dodgers organizational “Minor League Pitcher of the Year” for 2014.
  7. He was ranked as the top left-handed pitching prospect in all of baseball entering the 2015 season by MLBpipeline.com. In 2015, he was also ranked as the 8th-best prospect in baseball by MLB.com.
  8. He was 19 years old when he became the youngest starting pitcher to debut in the Majors since Félix Hernández in the 2005 season and the second youngest Dodgers starting pitcher to debut since 18-year-old Rex Barney in the 1943 season.
  9. In 2016, he became the youngest Dodgers pitcher to ever pitch in the postseason at the age of 20 years, 62 days.

When asked about the condition, he said, “That’s how God works. He gave me a bad left eye but a good left arm.” He later underwent elective surgery on May 19, 2015, to correct the condition.
  13. He was arrested for domestic battery in May 2019 and Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer deferred prosecution on the condition that Urías participate in a hearing, not commit acts of violence against anyone, and complete a 52-week domestic violence counseling program in person.
  14. Following an incident at an LAFC soccer match that he attended, Julio Urías was arrested for felony domestic violence on September 3, 2023. As per a witness, he assaulted a female in the area just outside BMO Stadium and the witness then notified police. Urías was then taken into custody without incident, processed, and released after posting bail. Following the incident, he was placed on administrative leave by Major League Baseball on September 6 as they conducted an investigation of the incident.
