Keshav Maharaj Facts

  1. In his developmental years, Keshav used to be a pace bowler. He had tried spin bowling just for fun at a practice session in school and found that his accuracy was very good. He soon found a greater rhythm in his bowling action as a spin bowler and stuck to it.
  2. When he captured his first 5-wicket haul in Test match cricket in March 2017 against New Zealand, it was just the 7th 5-wicket haul by a South African spinner in a test match against New Zealand. The rarity can be attributed to the fact that both countries are not highly renowned for producing too many spinners and the pitches provided for test match cricket in both countries are much more suited to pace bowling.
  3. In July 2018, during a Test match against Sri Lanka, he had recorded astonishing bowling figures of 9 for 124. These were the then best bowling figures in a Test innings by a visiting bowler in Sri Lanka as well as by a South African bowler in Asia. He had also become just the 2nd left-arm spinner, after Sri Lanka’s Rangana Herath, to claim 9 wickets in a test match innings.
  4. In June 2021, he became just the 2nd South African bowler to take a hat-trick (3 wickets in 3 successive deliveries) in a Test match. The first South African to do so was Geoff Griffin in 1960.
