- Matteo first came into the spotlight in April 2023 when he defeated 3rd seed and then world number 4 Casper Ruud in straight sets in the 2nd round of the Madrid Open – an ATP Masters 1000 event. This was his career’s first win against a player ranked in the ‘Top 10’ of the official ATP singles rankings.
- The result also meant that he had reached the 3rd round of an ATP Masters 1000 (an annual series of 9 prestigious tournaments featuring the top-ranked players on the ATP Tour (a worldwide top-tier tennis tour organized by the ATP)) event for the first time in his career. Consequently, he broke into the ‘Top 100’ of the official ATP singles rankings at the end of the tournament.
