Miguel Ángel López Facts

  1. Miguel, shortly before he was due to compete at the Tour del Porvenir bicycle race event in 2011, was involved in a scuffle with a couple of burglars. They had pointed a knife at him demanding that he hand over his bicycle to them. Miguel, however, had other ideas. Instead of surrendering or running away, he chose to fight the goons and somehow managed to escape the scene. Although he had suffered a severe wound, the story of his bravery had spread far and wide in the cycling world and across Colombia. He was later given the nickname ‘Superman’ for his exemplary courage.
  2. His breakthrough year, in the junior category, had arrived in 2014, when he had won the Tour de l’Avenir, widely regarded as the most coveted Under-23 cycling race. The same year, he had also won in the Under-23 category of the Vuelta a Colombia.
  3. At the 2019 edition of the Giro d’Italia, during the 20th stage of the race, a fan in the crowd had knocked him down just 5 km before the finish line. Enraged, he had hit the spectator 4 times, including knocking the hat off his head. However, the race jury had somehow decided not to apply any punishment to Miguel. A day after the race had finished, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the sport’s governing body, had announced that they were investigating the incident.
  4. In October 2020, on the opening day of the Giro d’Italia, during the time trial event, he had suffered a nasty crash and had to be hospitalized for treatment. His bike had hit a bump and he had lost control, careering into the safety barriers at high speed.
