Mike Stewart is an American bodyboarder and bodysurfer who is widely regarded as the father of modern competitive bodyboarding, a pioneer of the technique of big-wave tow-in surfing, and also a master bodysurfer. Having been active in the sport of bodyboarding since its inception, he is one of the most experienced pros on the circuit has been crowned the World Champion 9 times as of March 2020 and has triumphed at the annual Banzai Pipeline event a record 11 times. His exploits in the sport of bodysurfing have been no less impressive, having won the Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic title a record 15 times as of March 2020. Mike has also been heavily involved in the design and manufacture of bodyboards all through his competitive career and in 1998, he launched his line of boards under the label Science Bodyboards. He has been credited with the design of the Gyroll leash, a piece of bodyboarding equipment made up of 14 different components.

Mike Stewart Facts
- He began riding waves from the age of just 5 in Diamond Head, O’ahu. He used to rely on chunks of styrofoam for riding before getting used to bodyboards.
- Mike missed out on the first professional bodyboarding contest at The Banzai Pipeline, Hawaii, the Coca-Cola Sure Craft Bodyboarding Championships because he was never given any official communication about the event. In 1982, he missed his high school graduation so that he could participate in the first bodyboarding contest at Sandy Beach, O’ahu. He ended the competition in 3rd place.
- Mike finished in 3rd place at the inaugural 1982 International Morey Boogie Bodyboard Pro Championships. He was also the first-ever bodyboarder to land an air forward at Sunset Beach, O’ahu.
- Mike has been accorded the title of ‘Mister Pipeline’ in recognition of his skills and because he has been widely regarded as the best wave rider of any kind. He was the first non-stand-up surfer to have been honored with this accolade.
- He has had cameo roles in films such as In God’s Hands (1998) and Blue Crush (2002). The first-ever bodyboarding video game titled Mike Stewart’s Pro Bodyboarding was released in 1999.
