Mix Master Mike Facts

  1. He grew up listening to his uncle Tony’s massive record collection. He was also a big metalhead at the time and listened to bands such as Slayer, Led Zeppelin, and Motörhead.
  2. Mix Master Mike got his start by working venues such as weddings, celebrations, garage DJ battles, and house parties.
  3. He, DJ Qbert, and DJ Apollo decided to form a turntablist group named titled Invisibl Skratch Piklz, formerly Shadow of the Prophet, in 1989. All 3 of them were of Filipino descent and lived in the San Francisco Bay Area.
  4. He calls members of his fanbase Mix Fam.
  5. International Turntablist Federation honored him with a 1995 Grand Wizzard Theodore lifetime achievement award.
  6. He is well-known for his intricate scratch routines, using heavy bass, and using a wah-wah pedal with his turntables, which is commonly used by rock and metal guitarists.
  7. Mix Master Mike was often credited with inventing the ‘Tweak Scratch’. To achieve the drop in sound and pitch, he moves his record back and forth while the platter motor is stopped.
  8. A secret character that physically resembles him can be unlocked by entering a cheat code in SSX Tricky (2002), a snowboarding video game.
  9. With the help of Skullcandy, he designed and released official Mix Master Mike headphones on December 2, 2010.
  10. He, alongside other Beastie Boys members, was inducted into the Rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame in May 2012.
  11. After the release of their 9th studio album, Elephants on Acid (2018), B-Real announced Mix Master Mike would become a member of the hip hop group Cypress Hill. With that, he joined other members – Sen Dog, DJ Muggs, and Bobo.
  12. Mix Master Mike listed his biggest influences as Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane, and Miles Davis. The most important thing he learned from Miles Davis is the power of silence on building up excitement within the crowd.
  13. He has his line of sunglasses as part of Black Flys Eyewear, named MMMFLY.
  14. He is good friends with John Rinehart, an author, short film producer, speaker, and CFO of Sacramento Kings, and his wife.
