  1. He was a member of the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York and mentored under Sanford Meisner for 2 years along with Dustin Hoffman, James Caan, and Gene Hackman who were his classmates.
  2. After graduation in 1953, he joined the United States Army and served for almost 2 years earning the rank of Private First Class and received the National Defense Service Medal for his service.
  3. In April 2002, during a rehearsal for the film Open Range (2003), he fell off a horse and fractured several ribs.
  4. On September 18, 2003, he was presented with the Hollywood Walk of Fame star.
  5. During his struggling days as an actor, he was roommates with fellow aspiring actors Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman in New York.
