Rolando Romero Facts

  1. Having competed in his first professional bout in December 2016, Rolando had accumulated a flawless 11-0 win-loss record by February 2020 after which he was given the right to face undefeated Dominican boxer, Jackson Marinez, for the vacant WBA interim lightweight title. The bout was scheduled for August 2020 and Rolando had captured the title via unanimous decision (after 12 rounds) with the judges’ scorecards reading 118–110, 116–112, and 115–113. However, the judges’ decision became quite controversial as many fans and media persons felt that Jackson was the deserving winner.
  2. His next bout was scheduled for January 2021 against Justin Pauldo. However, Justin was recorded 5lbs over the contracted weight after which Rolando’s team had agreed to change the contracted weight to 140 lbs. Despite both sides agreeing to the new terms, the bout had to be canceled after Justin had failed a pre-fight physical.
  3. Avery Sparrow was then arranged as a last-minute opponent whom Rolando managed to defeat in the 7th round via technical knockout. He was highly critical of Avery’s fighting style after the bout, even terming his opponent a ‘coward’.
  4. He was then scheduled to defend his title against Austin Dulay in July 2021 but the latter had withdrawn just a few days before the scheduled date after which Rolando had claimed that Austin had pulled out due to a ‘panic attack’. Austin had responded by stating that he suffered a knee injury and had even offered to give Rolando USD 10k out of his fight purse to reschedule the bout.
  5. However, that did not come to pass as Anthony Yigit was asked to become Rolando’s new opponent. The WBA interim lightweight title was no longer on the line, though, because Anthony had weighed in 5.2 lbs over the 135 lb limit. Rolando cruised to victory in the 7th-round via technical knockout.
  6. In October 2021, numerous allegations of s*xual assault were made against him. However, no charges had been filed against him as the allegations could not be substantiated. Despite this, he had been pulled from his December 2021 bout against Gervonta Davis.
