- She was born and raised in Balali village alongside her siblings.
- It was her father Mahavir Singh who trained Sangeeta and her siblings at an early age. He was inspired to do so after witnessing weightlifter Karnam Malleswari become the first Indian woman to win a medal at the 2000 Olympics as well as his coach Chandgi Ram.
- Initially, her mother was against the decision of her father to train his daughters to be wrestlers as she was worried if they would ever get married if they were built like pehlwans (Wrestlers).
- Her oldest sister Geeta Phogat became the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
