Vinesh Phogat is an Indian freestyle wrestler who hails from the accomplished Phogat family of wrestlers and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers in the rise to prominence of female wrestling in India. Representing India in freestyle wrestling, she had won the ‘Gold’ medal at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games (48 kg), the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games (50 kg), the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games (50 kg), the 2021 Almaty Asian Wrestling Championships (53 kg), and the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games (53 kg). She had clinched the ‘Silver’ medal at the 2015 Doha Asian Wrestling Championships (48 kg), the 2017 New Delhi Asian Wrestling Championships (55 kg), the 2018 Bishkek Asian Wrestling Championships (50 kg), and the 2013 Johannesburg Youth Wrestling Championship (51 kg).   1. She holds the record for being the first Indian female wrestler to have won a ‘Gold’ medal at both the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games.
  2. She had achieved this feat when she had won the ‘Gold’ medal at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games in the 50 kg category. This had also made her the first Indian female wrestler to win a ‘Gold’ medal at the Asian Games.
  3. In 2019, she had become the first Indian athlete, across all sports disciples, to be nominated for the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards.
  4. In 2020, she was honored with the ‘Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna’ award, the highest sporting honor in India.
  5. At the Commonwealth Games 2022 held in Birmingham, England, Vinesh Phogat won the gold medal in the women’s freestyle 53 kg category.
  6. In January 2023, Vinesh accused Bharatiya Janata Party MP, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, of physical abuse and s*xual harassment.
  7. In July 2023, Phogat received a notice from the anti-doping agency for failure to comply with the whereabouts requirements.
  8. In August 2023, Vinesh was pulled out of the Asian Games after suffering a knee injury.
  9. In December 2023, Vinesh returned her Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award to the government to protest against the election of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh’s aide Sanjay Singh as the WFI president.
