- It was one of his MMA coaches in Montana who nicknamed him ‘Sugar’ at the start of his career.
- For the first 5 fights of his career, Sean O’Malley fought in his native Montana and then left to fight in North Dakota. Afterward, he fought for Legacy Fighting Alliance where he got a highlight-reel knockout over David Nuzzo. Following the victory, he earned a spot on Dana White‘s Contender Series 2Â when he took on Alfred Khashakyan. After defeating Khashakyan with a stunning knockout in the first round, he was awarded a UFC contract.
- On December 1, 2017, he made his Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) debut against Terrion Ware at The Ultimate Fighter 26 Finale. He went on to win the fight via unanimous decision.

However, Sean was subsequently submitted by Héctor Lombard with an ankle-lock. As the team advanced to the next round and faced Team Strikeforce, Sean went to a draw with former Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez and both got eliminated from the round. Team UFC ended up as the winner of the tournament.
- At UFC 248, he faced José Alberto Quiñónez on March 7, 2020, and won the fight via TKO in the first round. With this win, he secured his first Performance of the Night award.
