Stephen studied at the Lochinver House School for boys in Potters Bar, before going on to attend the Haileybury and Imperial Service College (now co-educational) in the village of Hertford Heath, Hertfordshire.
Then, he enrolled at the Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, to pursue his Bachelor of Arts in law but took a hiatus for a year to care for his mother who had been diagnosed with colon cancer and died at the age of 45. After her death, Stephen enlisted at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art where he studied for three years graduating from there in 1994.
