- Growing up, he took a great interest in football and his parents noted that he used to sleep with a football under his arm every night as a small child.
- At the age of 8 during the Pop Warner (also known as Pop Warner Little Scholars) games, he routinely threw passes of more than 30 yards while his peers could typically throw a football little more than 10 yards.
- When he was a child, he was inspired by his grandfather Seu Tagovailoa who was highly respected in the local Samoan community and was regularly addressed as “Chief Tagovailoa”. Following Seu’s demise in 2014, Tua Tagovailoa considered quitting the game but Tua and his father eventually agreed that he could best honor his late grandfather by continuing to play the sport.
- During the 2017 recruiting cycle, Tua Tagovailoa was considered a four-star recruit. Also, he was ranked the top high school prospect in the state of Hawaii.
- During his freshman season, he was named the Offensive MVP of the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship.
