Vaush Facts
- Vaush was first featured in an online discussion with the political commentator, former Twitch streamer, and YouTube personality known as Destiny (Steven Kenneth Bonnell II). Some members of Destiny’s had encouraged Vaush to start a Twitch channel of his own.
- Vaush had stated in an interview that he felt that other left-leaning members of the online community were too academic to reach the demographic of insecure white men. He felt that this demographic was most susceptible to online radicalization and his idea was to create loud and angry content that might appeal to them. He also stated that his biggest challenge would be to balance this kind of content in such a way that he could still create an inclusive community that could have a decent proportion of women, gay, and trans people.
- He often copies the style of right-wing YouTubers and employs similar video titles so that his videos are suggested by recommendation algorithms to his target audience. He also often uses memes and slang in his videos to appeal to youngsters.
- In 2019, he was banned from Twitch after he had stated that the United States should invade Israel to defend Palestinians. Although he later stated that he might have gone too far with this idea, the incident forced him to transition to YouTube as his main platform.
- In December 2021, he was banned from Twitch again, this time indefinitely, for using the racial epithet ‘cracker’ (used especially about poor rural whites in the Southern United States) during a stream. This happened while he was discussing whether the term is a racial slur and whether saying it should be a bannable offense.
- Earlier that year, he was embroiled in another controversy, this time on Twitter, when old videos of him emerged where he was seen justifying his past uses of the ‘N-word’. He was forced to clarify that he no longer stood by those arguments that he had made years ago.
