Wiaan Mulder Facts

  1. A child prodigy, Wiaan had started playing age-group cricket for his home province of Gauteng from the under-13 tier. When he had made his first-class debut in October 2016, playing for the Highveld Lions against the Cape Cobras, in the 2016-17 season of the Sunfoil Series (the premier domestic first-class cricket competition in South Africa), he was still in high school.
  2. He had picked 7 wickets on debut, including a spell of 3/10 in the Cape Cobras‘ first innings. Just about a year later, in October 2017, he had made his international debut, in an ODI match against Bangladesh, while still in his teens. He had to wait about a year and 4 months after this, though, to make his test match debut and a further 2 years and 2 months to make his T20I debut.
  3. Wiaan was one of the few bright spots for South Africa at the 2016 Under-19 ICC Cricket World Cup where the team had finished a lowly 11th in the 16-team tournament. He was the team’s best bowler, picking up 3 wickets for 42 runs, in their opening match against hosts Bangladesh. However, his efforts were not enough as South Africa lost that match by 43 runs, and the team was then upset by minnows Namibia in the next match, thus crashing out at the group stage.
  4. He was also South Africa’s best bowler in the team’s last group stage game, against Scotland, scalping 2 wickets for 16 runs; as well as in their plate semi-final match against Zimbabwe, picking 1 wicket for 10 runs. That 8-wicket loss to Zimbabwe was another poor performance after which they were left to fight it out with New Zealand for 11th place. Wiaan shone again, with stellar figures of 4/14, scuppering New Zealand’s chase of 288 runs.
