Vafa Hakhamaneshi is an Iranian professional soccer player who has represented, as a defender, Sepahan Novin F.C. (2008-2010), Foolad Natanz F.C. (2010-2011), Naft Tehran F.C. (2011-2013), Foolad F.C. (2013-2014), Fajr Sepasi Shiraz F.C. (2014-2016), F.C. Rayka Babol (2016-2018), Khak Naft Abadan F.C. (2018-2019), Zob Ahan Esfahan F.C. (2020), and Tractor S.C. (2020-2021) in Iran; Al-Minaa SC (2019-2020) in Iraq; Ratchaburi F.C. (2021) in Thailand; and Chennaiyin FC (2022-Present) in India. It was the club’s 2nd such title and made it the then 4th most successful team in the competition. As of December 2022, the club was just one among 4 to have won the Persian Gulf Pro League title more than once. The other 3 clubs to have done so were Esteghlal F.C. (4 titles), Sepahan S.C. (5 titles), and Persepolis F.C. (7 titles). At the international level, he has represented Iran at the under-20 tier.

1. Vafa started his youth career in 2008 when, as a 17-year-old, he joined the youth system of the top-flight Iranian professional soccer club Sepahan S.C. 
2. Although he stayed in that system until 2010, his senior career began in 2008 itself when he started representing Sepahan Novin F.C. It is the reserve team of Sepahan S.C. and competes in the 4th tier of the Iranian soccer league system.
3. In September 2022, on his club debut for Chennaiyin FC, against TRAU FC in a Durand Cup match, he scored a goal from a header in a 4–1 win. This was just the 3rd goal of his senior-level professional cub/domestic career, having played at the level for nearly 15 years by then. The Durand Cup, an annual Indian domestic soccer competition that was first held in 1888, is the oldest existing club soccer tournament in Asia and the 5th oldest national soccer competition in the world.
4. In October 2022, in an ISL (Indian Super League, the top division of the Indian professional soccer league system) home match against Bengaluru FC, Vafa volunteered to serve as Chennaiyin FC’s goalkeeper after the team’s regular goalkeeper was sent off with 8 minutes remaining in the match. He performed quite admirably and did not concede a goal in the remainder of the match as it petered out into a 1-1 draw.
5. In November 2022, after scoring Chennaiyin FC’s winning goal in a match against East Bengal Club, he ran straight to the camera behind the goal and lifted his shirt above his head to reveal a message that read #WOMEN #LIFE #FREEDOM.
6. He later stated that he wanted to draw everyone’s attention to the bloody protests going on in his home country of Iran that were sparked by the custodial death of a 22-year-old woman named Mahsa Amini who was detained by the country’s morality police because of her clothing. He wanted to express his solidarity with the protesters who were facing a brutal crackdown by the country’s ultra-orthodox ruling elite and police.
