John Gavin Facts
- Director Alfred Hitchcock was unhappy with his performance as Sam Loomis in the classic thriller, Psycho (1960). The legendary filmmaker called his performance stiff and considered his acting style as wooden.
- John was selected to play James Bond in Diamonds Are Forever (1971) following George Lazenby’s departure after On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969). Sadly, the unusual move to sign an American actor was shelved at the last minute as Sean Connery came on board for his final appearance as the MI6 agent in the 1971 film. John’s contract was swiftly terminated and he was paid full salary. Additionally, he was again considered to star in Live and Let Die (1973) but, Roger Moore was eventually chosen for the role.
- He was bilingual and could fluently speak English and Spanish languages.
- From June 1981 to June 1986, John served as the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico. He was appointed by his close friend and the then-president, Ronald Reagan.
- He served as the President of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) from 1971 until 1973.
- The year 1960 was special for Gavin as he got the opportunity to work with two pioneering directors: Alfred Hitchcock in Psycho and Stanley Kubrick in Spartacus.
