Andrew Yang is an American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and lawyer who founded the non-profit organization Venture for America in 2011, which works to create jobs in struggling American cities. In November 2017, he launched his campaign for the Democratic Party nomination for the 2020 United States Presidential elections. The key elements of his campaign were ‘Freedom Dividend’ (a universal basic income scheme),  ‘Medicare for All’, and ‘Human-Centered Capitalism’.

  1. He has stated that he used to face bullying and racial abuse by classmates at school. He reckoned that the bullying was partly because he was one of the younger kids in his class as he had skipped a grade.
  2. While he was attending the Phillips Exeter Academy, Andrew made it to the U.S. national debate team and eventually competed at the world debate championships in London.
  3. After his graduation from law school, Andrew worked as a corporate attorney at Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York City. He left the job within 5 months and co-founded Stargiving, a website for celebrity-affiliated philanthropic fundraising. The startup, after initial success, folded in 2002.
  4. He then participated in several ventures including a party-organizing business and a healthcare startup. In 2005, he joined a small test/exam preparation company called Manhattan Prep and became its CEO in 2006, serving in the position until 2012.
  5. He was selected by the US Administration as a ‘Champion of Change’ to honor his work with the Venture For America organization in 2012. In 2015, he was selected as a ‘Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship’.
  6. In April 2012, he was placed at number 27 in Fast Company‘s list of ‘100 Most Creative People in Business’.
  7. He has authored the books Smart People Should Build Things (2014) and The War on Normal People (2018).
  8. Andrew’s campaign slogans for the Democratic Party Presidential nomination (2020) included ‘Humanity First’, ‘Make America Think Harder’ (MATH), and ‘Not Left, Not Right, Forward’. His campaign’s supporters were informally and affectionately known as the ‘Yang Gang’.
  9. Andrew is the godfather of the United States’ 26th President Theodore Roosevelt’s great-great-granddaughter.
