Ashley Nicole Black is an American comedienne, actress, and writer who rose to fame as the writer and correspondent for the late-night talk and news satire TV show Full Frontal with Samantha Bee (2016-2019), her phenomenal work fetching her the Primetime Emmy Award in 2017 for “Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special”. She went on to write for various other programs on the small screen including HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show (2019, 2021), having acted in it as well. - Ashley has disclosed that, contrary to what may be expected, she was far from being funny while growing up. She used to be a sensitive, painfully introverted, and moody kid with her mother having talked of how she would find her wailing every day when picking her up from elementary school.
- When she was going to Northwestern University, her parents had purchased for her the package of improv classes at The Second City so she would have something enjoyable to do, as a hobby. She had an excellent teacher who had quickly pulled her aside and pointed out that she had great potential. The encouragement had convinced Ashley to audition for professional jobs when she was in her first classes. When she began to write, she got a writing teacher. Ashley had penned a sketch that should have been amusing but it had ended up being dark instead, having moved her teacher to tears who then had declared Ashley to be a talented writer. It was only then that Ashley had become aware of her writing skill.
