Charlotte Edwards is an English former professional cricketer who had represented her country in all 3 formats of the sport (23 Tests, 191 ODIs, and 95 T20Is), as a top-order batter. Widely recognized as one of the greatest female cricketers of all time, she was the first female cricketer to have scored 10,000 international runs (across all 3 formats). In an international career that spanned 2 decades (1996–2016), she had captained England in 220 international matches. Under her leadership, the English team had won the 2009 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, the 2009 ICC Women’s World Twenty20, and 3 Ashes series (2008, 2013, 2014). In the English domestic circuit, she had played for East Anglia (1994–1999), Kent Women (2000–2016), and Hampshire Women (2017–2018) across all 3 formats. A rare occurrence in modern cricket, Charlotte had also played domestic cricket outside of her home country representing teams such as Northern Districts (2000-01, 2002-03) in New Zealand; and Western Australia (2014-15), and South Australia (2016-17) in Australia.

Charlotte Edwards Facts

  1. When she made her international debut in July 1996, Charlotte was the youngest player ever to represent England. The record was broken by 15-year-old Holly Colvin in 2005.
  2. Just a day before her 18th birthday, she had hammered 173 runs not out in an ODI match against Ireland. This was the then-record for the highest individual score in a Women’s ODI match.
  3. In November 2010, she had broken Australian icon Karen Rolton’s world record of 141 ODI appearances. The match that the record was broken in was against Sri Lanka where she had produced career-best bowling figures of 4 wickets for 30 runs.
  4. In 2014, she was named as one of the 5 ‘Wisden Cricketers of the Year’. She was only the 2nd female English cricketer to have achieved the feat after Claire Taylor was similarly honored in 2009.
  5. A pioneer in women’s T20 batting, she has been featured in franchise-based T20 leagues around the world, turning out for the Perth Scorchers (2015-16) and the Adelaide Strikers (2016-17) in the WBBL (Women’s Big Bash League; and the Southern Vipers (2016–2017) in the KSL (Kia Super League).
  6. She was the first female cricketer to have broken the barrier of 2,000 runs in T20Is. She holds the record of being the first cricketer, male or female, to record 2,500 runs in T20Is.
  7. Charlotte holds the record of being the first cricketer to have scored 1,000 runs, taken 50 wickets, and held 50 catches in Women’s ODI matches.
  8. For her services to cricket, she was appointed an MBE in 2009 and CBE in 2014.
