Cody Gakpo is a Dutch professional soccer player who has represented, as a winger, PSV Eindhoven (2018-2023) in the Netherlands and Liverpool F.C. (2023-Present) in England. Between 2016 and 2019, he also appeared in 26 matches for Jong PSV, the reserve team of PSV Eindhoven. Jong PSV competes in the second tier of the soccer league system in the Netherlands. With PSV Eindhoven, he won the Eredivisie (the highest level of professional soccer in the Netherlands) title in the 2017–18 season and the KNVB Cup (the premier domestic knockout soccer competition in the Netherlands) in the 2021–22 season. He scored the winning goal for PSV Eindhoven in the final of the latter tournament. With the club, he also won the Johan Cruyff Shield in both 2021 and 2022. The trophy, also known as the Dutch Super Cup, is named after Dutch soccer legend Johan Cruyff, and is annually decided by a one-off match that is played between the winners of the Eredivisie and the KNVB Cup. At the international level, Cody represented the Netherlands at the under-18, under-19, under-20, and under-21 tiers before making his senior national debut in June 2021.

- Cody started his youth career in 2007 when, as an 8-year-old, he joined the youth academy of PSV Eindhoven, one of the Netherlands’ ‘Big 3’ soccer clubs (the others being AFC Ajax and Feyenoord).
- As his father is of Ghanaian descent and was born in Togo, while his mother is Dutch, Cody was eligible to play for the Netherlands, Ghana, or Togo at the international level. He chose to represent his birth country and played for the Dutch national team from the under-18 tier (in 2016).
- The 2019–20 season was his breakthrough for the senior team of PSV Eindhoven as he recorded 7 goals and as many assists in 25 games in the Eredivisie.
- Cody was called up to the Dutch senior national squad for UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) Euro (a quadrennial continental championship) 2020 (played in June and July 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic). He made his debut in the Netherlands’ third match of the group stage of the tournament, against North Macedonia, coming on as a substitute in the 79th minute. This made him the first Dutch player, since Martien Vreijsen in 1980, to have made his international debut at a European championship.
- In May 2022, for his performances in the 2021–22 season, he won the ‘Dutch Footballer of the Year’ award, having scored 21 goals in 47 games across all competitions. The award is determined by a poll of Dutch professional soccer players plying their trade in the top 2 divisions of the Dutch soccer league system.
- In 2023, Cody was purchased by Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven for a transfer fee of between £35.4 and £44.3 million.
