Damar Hamlin Facts
- In his final season (2020) with the University of Pittsburgh, Damar was named the team captain and was included in the ‘Second-Team All-ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference)’.
- That year, he started organizing annual charity Christmas toy drives (charity events that collect toys/money for children in need) in his hometown of McKees Rocks. The GoFundMe (an American for-profit crowdfunding platform) campaign for his toy drive that year had set a goal of USD 2,500.
- After the Buffalo Bills selected him in the 2021 NFL Draft, Damar signed a 4-year rookie contract with the team in May 2021. He mostly played a reserve role in his first season but took up a starting role in 2022 after teammate Micah Hyde suffered a season-ending neck injury in the 2nd week of that season.
- On January 2, 2023, Damar collapsed on the field after making a tackle in an NFL game, against the Cincinnati Bengals. He remained motionless at midfield and team trainers and paramedics rushed to his side within seconds.
- He was immediately administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (an emergency procedure consisting of chest compressions to manually preserve brain function until further measures are taken to restore blood circulation and breathing) and automated external defibrillation (the application of electricity which stops irregularities in the heartbeat) on the field.
- A few minutes later, Damar was transported by ambulance to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center (a group of health colleges and institutions of the University of Cincinnati, situated in Cincinnati, Ohio) where he was reported to be in critical condition. Later that night, it was revealed that he had suffered a cardiac arrest and his heartbeat was restored on the field of play.
- He was discharged from the hospital about a week later and shifted to Buffalo, the second-largest city in the state of New York, where his NFL team (Buffalo Bills) is based, to continue further treatment. 2 days later, he was discharged from Buffalo General Medical Center (a not-for-profit healthcare network that manages 5 hospitals in the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area) to continue his rehabilitation at home.
- Shortly after this medical ordeal that he went through in January 2023, Damar’s aforementioned 2020 GoFundMe toy drive saw a massive spike in donations. The drive’s initial goal was to raise USD 2,500 but contributions from fans, friends, well-wishers, fellow players, coaches, and NFL executives saw the fund receive more than USD 8.6 million by January 10, 2023.
- He was the most searched person on Google in 2023 globally.
