Dani Olmo Facts

  1. Dani’s youth career began in 2006 when, as an 8-year-old, he joined RCD Espanyol Cantera (‘Cantera’ translates to ‘Quarry’), the youth academy of RCD Espanyol, a Spanish professional soccer club based in Barcelona, Spain.
  2. In 2007, he was signed up by the famed La Masia (The Farmhouse), a term used for the Spanish titan FC Barcelona‘s youth academy. He stayed there until 2014 when he joined GNK Dinamo Zagreb Academy, the youth system of the Croatian professional soccer club GNK Dinamo Zagreb. By 2015, Dani began representing both GNK Dinamo Zagreb II (2015-2017) and GNK Dinamo Zagreb (2015-2020).
  3. Due to his involvement with GNK Dinamo Zagreb through the mid and late 2010s, Dani speaks Croatian fluently. By the end of 2017, the club’s officials had even stated that they were trying to get him Croatian citizenship so that Dani could represent the country at the senior international level in the near future.
  4. Dani, too, was reported to have shown an inclination for the switch. This was even though he had represented his native Spain at the under-16, under-17, and under-18 tiers by then. The attempts ultimately could not materialize and Dani made his debut for Spain’s under-21 side in October 2018.
  5. With Spain, he won the 2019 edition of the UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) European Under-21 Championship. He scored 3 goals in the tournament, including one each in the semi-final and the final. Dani was named the ‘Player of the Match’ in the final and was also included in the ‘Team of the Tournament’. The title was Spain’s 5th such and tied the country with Italy as the then most successful team in the competition.
  6. On his senior national debut for Spain, in November 2019, in a 7–0 home victory over Malta, Dani scored a goal just 3 minutes after his introduction, as a substitute. With fellow debutant Pau Torres also scoring a goal, this was the first occasion in 30 years where 2 Spaniards had scored in their debut match.
  7. In August 2020, he scored the opening goal in RB Leipzig‘s 2–1 victory over Atlético Madrid in the quarter-final stage of the 2019-20 season of the UEFA Champions League (the most prestigious club competition in European soccer). The result meant that RB Leipzig progressed to the semi-final stage of the competition for the first time in history.
  8. Dani was a key member of the Spanish squad that won the ‘Silver’ medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games (held in July and August 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
