Daniel Andrews is an Australian politician who became the 48th premier of Victoria in December 2014 and started serving as a member for Mulgrave in the Victorian Legislative Assembly in 2002. In 2006, he became a part of the Bracks Ministry and served as the Minister for Consumer Affairs. He was appointed Minister for Health in the Brumby Ministry in 2007 and served until the defeat of the government at the 2010 election by Ted Baillieu. His time as the premier of Victoria consists of many historical events such as the 2019–20 Australian bushfire season and the COVID-19 pandemic. Regarded as a prominent figure among progressive politicians in Australia, he was described as the “dominant political figure of his generation” by The Age in 2022.

  1. His family shifted from Glenroy to Wangaratta in northeastern Victoria in 1983.
  2. In 1990, Daniel Andrews relocated to Melbourne in order to attend Monash University.
  3. He joined the Australian Labor Party (ALP) in 1993.
  4. Following his graduation, he became an electorate officer for federal Labor MP Alan Griffin. From 1999 to 2002, he worked at the party’s head office, initially as an organizer and then as assistant state secretary.
  5. Daniel Andrews has been a member of the Socialist Left faction of the Labor Party.
  6. He has been a supporter of same-sex marriage and the protection and expansion of LGBT rights. He has also supported the promotion of awareness and respect for transgender and transitioning people, especially among young Victorians.
  7. While on holiday on the Mornington Peninsula, Daniel Andrews slipped and fell on wet steps on the morning of March 9, 2021. He was hospitalized and was placed under intensive care as he suffered several broken ribs and a broken vertebra from the fall but did not have any head injuries. Until his return to the office on June 28, 2021, Deputy Premier James Merlino served as the Acting Premier.
  8. On two occasions in October 2021, he was fined $400 for breaching face mask rules. In both scenarios, he walked through a car park at Parliament House to his press conference without wearing a mask.
  9. In March 2022, Daniel Andrews tested positive for COVID-19 and continued working in isolation until he made a full recovery.
  10. Some of the accomplishments of his government include the ‘Big Build’ infrastructure projects, rental law reforms, voluntary assisted dying, legalization of medicinal cannabis, adoption reforms, decriminalization of s*x work, first nations treaties, safe injection rooms, compensation reform for victims of institutionalized child-s*x abuse, and the introduction of exclusion zones for protests outside abortion clinics.
  11. In April 2023, he became the longest-serving Labor Premier in Victoria’s history, overtaking John Cain Jr. who served as Premier from 1982 to 1990.
  12. Daniel Andrews is a huge fan of the Essendon Football Club.
