Satya Pal Malik is an Indian politician who served as the 10th and last Governor of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir from August 2018 to October 2019. It was during his tenure as the governor that the revocation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was taken on August 5, 2019. After that, he was appointed as the 18th governor of Goa and he also served as the 21st Governor of Meghalaya until October 2022.

  1. His political career started when he was elected as the student union president in 1968, a position he served in until 1969.
  2. Satya Pal Malik contested the election as a member of Charan Singh’s Bharatiya Kranti Dal and emerged as the winner by receiving 42.4% of the votes cast, defeating his nearest rival Acharya Deepankar of the Communist Party of India who received 31.6% of the total votes cast. After this win, he was elected to any public office for the first time as a member of the legislative assembly from Baghpat.
  3. After the formation of Bharatiya Lok Dal in 1974, he joined the party and started serving as the general secretary of Lok Dal.
  4. He was appointed as the National Vice-President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2012.
  5. Satya Pal Malik served as the Governor of Bihar from October 2017 to August 2018.
  6. He was given additional charge to serve as Governor of Odisha on March 21, 2018, and he exercised his powers until May 28, 2018.
  7. During the 2020–2021 Indian farmers’ protest, Satya Pal Malik was invited to the Global Jat Summit on November 8, 2021, and in his speech, he warned the Indian government regarding the protest and said, “you will not be able to overcome the Sikhs. The Guru’s four children were slaughtered, but the Guru refused to surrender. You cannot defeat the Jats either.” He also added, “Indira Gandhi knew that she would be killed and she was killed [for ordering Bluestar]. They killed General Vaidya in Pune [for leading Bluestar] and Michael O’Dwyer in London [Lieutenant Governor Of Punjab during the Jallianwala Bagh massacre]. I have even said that don’t test the patience of the Sikh community.”
  8. He was appointed as the 21st Governor of Meghalaya on August 18, 2020, and he served the position until October 3, 2022.
  9. In an interview with noted journalist and interviewer Karan Thapar on April 14, 2023, Satya Pal Malik shared his views on the Pulwama attack and Narendra Modi, stating, “Narendra Modi had no dislike for corruption and has taken no action against those alleged to be involved in corruption because they were close to him.” He also stated that there was a major intelligence failure in the Pulwama incident, pointing out that the car carrying 300 kilograms of RDX explosives had come from Pakistan but had been traveling around the roads and villages of Jammu and Kashmir for 10-15 days without being detected by the authorities.
