Kira Yarmysh is a Russian political spokesperson/activist, and writer who is best known as the former press secretary and assistant of the late Russian opposition leader, lawyer, and anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny. She primarily fulfilled this role in the mid and late 2010s, a time when she also served as the press secretary of the Anti-Corruption Foundation – a non-profit organization established in 2011 by Alexei. The foundation used to publish investigations into alleged corruption by high-ranking Russian government officials. Kira is a writer as well and had published, in 2023, a novel titled The Incredible Events in Women’s Cell Number 3. Although sold as a fictional story, the novel was based on her personal experiences from the time she was detained for participating in an anti-corruption rally.

Kira Yarmysh Facts

1. After she graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, in the early 2010s, Kira worked in the press services of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts (the largest museum of European art in Moscow) as well as Utair (a Russian airline).
2. In 2013, she was a part of an election campaign for Russian opposition leader, lawyer, and anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny. He was vying for the post of the mayor of Moscow.
3. In August 2014, Kira became his press secretary as well as the press secretary of the Anti-Corruption Foundation – an organization established by Alexei that used to publish investigations into alleged corruption by high-ranking Russian government officials.
4. Over the next few years, she was arrested multiple times on charges like defamation and organization of public events without notifying the authorities. On February 1, 2021, she was placed under house arrest after she called for protests against Alexei’s arrest.
5. He had been imprisoned in January 2021, on account of multiple charges – relating to current and past legal cases against him. Kira fled Russia after being convicted on account of calling for protests against Alexei’s arrest.
