- He served in the United States Air Force as a radio announcer in the 1940s.
- His disastrous cockney accent as Bert in the Julie Andrews-starrer Mary Poppins (1964) has always been subjected to light-hearted mockery and criticism.
- Dick’s role model in comedy was Stan Laurel. He formed a close friendship with Laurel and delivered the eulogy at his funeral in 1965.
- In 2014, his career-defining role of Robert Petrie in The Dick Van Dyke Show was included at #22 in the list of ’50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time’ by TV Guide.
