Dimuth Karunaratne is a Sri Lankan professional cricketer who has represented his country primarily in the longer formats of the sport (Tests and ODIs), as an opening batter. In February 2019, Sri Lanka Cricket (the governing body for the sport in the country) had appointed him Sri Lanka’s captain in the test match format. Between April 2019 and May 2021, he had also served as Sri Lanka’s ODI captain. In the Sri Lankan domestic circuit, he has played for the Sinhalese Sports Club (2008–Present), Basnahira North (2009), and Wayamba (2010–Present) across all 3 formats. A rare occurrence in modern cricket, Dimuth has also played domestic cricket outside of his home country representing Hampshire County Cricket Club (2019) in England.

  1. In October 2017, in Sri Lanka’s very first day-night test match, against Pakistan, Dimuth had scored 196 runs in his team’s first innings. This had made him the first Sri Lankan batter to have scored 50, 100, and 150 runs in a day-night test match. Sri Lanka went on to win the match by 68 runs and he was named the ‘Player of the Match’. With this win, Sri Lanka had also won the 2-match test series by a margin of 2-0. For scoring 306 runs across the 2 matches, he was also named the ‘Player of the Series’.
  2. In 2017, he had become just the 7th Sri Lankan batter to have scored 1,000 test runs in a calendar year.
  3. In July 2018, in a test match against South Africa, he had become just the 4th Sri Lankan batter in history to ‘carry his bat’ (a phrase used to refer to an opening batter who has not been dismissed when the team’s innings is closed) in a test match. This was also the 50th test match of his career and he had become just the 3rd Sri Lankan batter to have scored a 100 in his 50th test match.
  4. For his performances in 2018, he was named in the ‘World Test XI’ by both the ICC (International Cricket Council) and ESPNCricinfo.
  5. In March 2019, he had been arrested over a drink-drive incident in Colombo. A motorist had been injured in the incident but Dimuth had later been released on bail. Sri Lanka Cricket, however, had taken no further action on the incident.
  6. In June 2019, in Sri Lanka’s first match of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, he had become just the 2nd batter to ‘carry his bat’ in an ICC Cricket World Cup match.
