Dominic Raab is a British politician, solicitor, and civil servant who served as Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Secretary of State for Justice, and Lord Chancellor from 2021 to 2023. He has also been a Member of Parliament (MP) for Esher and Walton as well as served as Brexit Secretary in 2018 and as both First Secretary of State and Foreign Secretary from 2019 to 2021. On October 25, 2022, he was reappointed by Rishi Sunak as Deputy Prime Minister, Justice Secretary, and Lord Chancellor but he resigned from Sunak’s government in April 2023 after a report over claims he bullied staff was given to Sunak.

Dominic Raab studied at Dr Challoner’s Grammar School (DCGS) in Amersham, Buckinghamshire. He then attended Lady Margaret Hall (one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford) and studied law. While at Oxford, he spent his time “doing a lot of karate” and captained the university karate team. He holds a black belt, third dan in karate.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Jurisprudence and then enrolled at Jesus College, Cambridge (a constituent college of the University of Cambridge) and obtained a Master of Laws degree.

  1. His father died of cancer when Dominic was 12 years old.
  2. During his time at Lady Margaret Hall, he had a room on the same corridor as future Channel 4 News presenter Cathy Newman.
  3. Dominic Raab’s first book The Assault on Liberty – What Went Wrong with Rights was published in 2009.
  4. Prior to becoming an MP in 2009, he said he did not support the Human Rights Act, stating that “The very enactment of the Human Rights Act has served as a trigger for the formulation of claims by lawyers and judicial reasoning by courts, using human rights arguments that would never have been dared before. The spread of rights has become contagious and, since the Human Rights Act, opened the door to vast new categories of claims, which can be judicially enforced against the government through the courts.”
  5. He was awarded as the Newcomer of the Year for 2011 at The Spectator magazine’s Parliamentary Awards.
  6. Dominic Raab co-authored the book Britannia Unchained in September 2012.
  7. He was placed at #4 in a list of the “Top 100 Most Influential Conservatives” of 2019 by LBC’s Iain Dale and a panel.
  8. Following the murder of politician Sir David Amess in October 2021, he told ITV News that he had received 3 death threats in the previous 2 years.
  9. In 2022, many unnamed sources within the Ministry of Justice told The Guardian that Raab created a “culture of fear” in the department and was “demeaning rather than demanding”, “very rude and aggressive”, and “wasn’t just unprofessional, he was a bully”.
