Henry Shipley Facts
- In the 2021-22 season of the Super Smash (New Zealand’s premier domestic T20 cricket tournament), he finished as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker – 18 dismissals in 11 matches. Henry was Canterbury’s best bowler in the team’s 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th matches of the league stage of the tournament – with his figures reading 2/17, 2/26, 3/14, 1/28, and 4/23 in those matches.
- Canterbury won 4 of the aforementioned 5 matches and Henry’s performances were critical in helping the team finish in the 2nd position in the league stage of the tournament. He was Canterbury’s best bowler (2/30) in the final of the tournament as well but could not prevent a 56-run defeat to league-stage table-toppers Northern Brave who won the Super Smash title for the 3rd time.
- In November 2022, Henry recorded career-best figures of 6/40 (which included a hat-trick (the feat of dismissing 3 batters off 3 legal deliveries) in the opening match of the season’s Ford Trophy (New Zealand’s premier domestic one-day cricket tournament), representing Canterbury, against Wellington. Quite surprisingly, it was the first hat-trick for Canterbury (and only the 4th overall) in the tournament’s 52-year history.
- He made his ODI (and international) debut for New Zealand in January 2023 in the 1st match of a 3-match bilateral away ODI series against Pakistan. He was dismissed for a ‘golden duck’ (dismissed on the first ball faced, without scoring any run) in the first half of the match and returned bowling figures of 0/28 in 6 overs in the second half, as Pakistan won the match by 6 wickets. Henry was not considered in New Zealand’s ‘Playing XI’ for the last 2 matches of the series where the team bounced back to clinch the series by a 2-1 margin.
- He played his next international match for New Zealand later that month – the first ODI of a 3-match bilateral away series against India. He picked his first 2 international wickets in that match but was carted around for 74 runs in 9 overs as India put up a massive total of 349 runs. In the 2nd half of the match, Henry bagged his 2nd successive international-level ‘golden duck’ as New Zealand lost a closely fought match by just 12 runs.
