Jay Rock is an American rapper and songwriter who has released several mixtapes as a solo artist and all his studio albums – Follow Me Home (2011), 90059 (2015), and Redemption (2018) – have peaked within the ‘Top 10’ of the US Rap charts. Apart from his solo career, he is also well recognized as a member of the hip hop supergroup Black Hippy whom he had joined in 2009. Although the group has not recorded a studio album together, they have often contributed to each other’s solo projects.

- Jay Rock, in his youth, had joined a local street gang known as the Bounty Hunter Bloods. He was even jailed twice for his misdemeanors while he was with the gang.
- He was introduced to music by his mother who was a huge fan of classic soul and blues music icons and would often make a young Jay listen to their songs. At the age of 12, he had also developed an interest in playing the keyboard. He soon began writing his own poems and verses as well which depicted his surroundings, his love for Los Angeles, and his life experiences.
- His musical talent was spotted by Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith, the founder and CEO of independent record label Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE). He had heard a verse written by Jay Rock in 2005 and had immediately decided to sign him on to his label.
- In 2010, he was featured on the cover of XXL magazine’s annual ‘Top 10 Freshmen’ issue. The list recognizes the 10 most promising hip hop artists who have made a mark that year. The same year, he was also recognized by MTV as one of the breakthrough MCs of the year.
- In February 2016, he was involved in a serious motorcycle accident which left him with several broken bones. He was taken for emergency surgery and recovered after a few months.
- His 2018 single titled King’s Dead had earned ‘Triple Platinum’ certification from the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) and ‘Double Platinum’ certification from MC (Music Canada). The song also won him his first Grammy Award, in the category of ‘Best Rap Performance’.
