Jerome Bettis is an American former football running back who played college football at the University of Notre Dame and was subsequently selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the 1993 NFL Draft as 10th overall. He also played with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Jerome Bettis studied at Mackenzie High School located in Detroit, Michigan. During his time there, he was a standout running back and linebacker and was rated the top player in the state by the Detroit Free Press as a senior. Also, he won the Gatorade Circle of Champions Player of the Year award.

After that, he enrolled at the University of Notre Dame situated in Notre Dame, Indiana. There, he played college football for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He concluded his career with 337 rushing attempts for 1,912 yards (5.7 yards per attempt) and made 32 receptions for 429 yards (13.4 yards per reception).

He eventually left the university to enter the 1993 NFL Draft but later returned in 1996 and took courses in “history, philosophy, marketing and business” totaling an 18-credit class load. Soon after, he returned to the NFL. Years later, he graduated with a business degree on May 15, 2022.

  1. Growing up, he enjoyed bowling and did not start playing football until high school.
  2. Along with his brother, he used to sell crack cocaine as a youth in Detroit.
  3. Jerome Bettis was diagnosed with asthma when he was 14 years old.
  4. In the 1993 NFL Draft, he was picked by the Los Angeles Rams in the first round, with the tenth overall selection. He subsequently signed a three-year, $4.625 million contract with a signing bonus in excess of $2 million on July 22, 1993.
  5. He was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers on April 20, 1996, with a third-round pick in the 1996 NFL Draft, in exchange for the Steelers‘ second-round pick and their fourth-round pick in the 1997 NFL Draft.
  6. Jerome Bettis rushed for a then career-high 1,431 yards and 11 touchdowns during his debut season with the Pittsburgh Steelers and was named to his second 1st team All-Pro team.
  7. He received an honorary Doctoral degree from Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Michigan on May 21, 2006.
  8. On June 5, 2007, Jerome Bettis opened a restaurant called “Jerome Bettis’ Grille 36”.
  9. In 2008, he was inducted into the Lou Holtz/Upper Ohio Valley Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2015.
