Jhulan Goswami Facts

  1. Initially enamored by soccer, her love for cricket began when she watched the 1992 ICC World Cup (Men’s edition) on television.
  2. She seriously began to follow and play the game at the age of 15, after witnessing the 1997 Women’s World Cup final live at the iconic Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata. She had received complimentary passes for the game and was inspired by Australian captain Belinda Clark’s victory lap around the stadium after the Aussies had overcome New Zealand.
  3. As training facilities were inadequate in her hometown of Chakdaha, she decided to train in Kolkata, her state’s capital and cricketing hub. Even though her parents were not agreeable to the idea of her traveling alone for about 80km at such a young age, she defied them and used to wake up at 4:30 a.m. to catch the local train that would take her to Kolkata so that she could reach her coaching facility in time for the start of her daily practice.
  4. In January 2020, Jhulan had bowled almost 1500 overs in the ODI format of the game, which was nearly 500 overs more than the 2nd-placed Cathryn Fitzpatrick.
  5. In April 2018, a postage stamp was issued in her honor at the Calcutta Sports Journalists’ Club. The stamp featured her picture along with Kolkata’s iconic monument, The Victoria Memorial.
  6. In 2010, the Government of India conferred on her the ‘Arjuna Award’, an annual award that recognizes outstanding achievement in sports. She was honored with the ‘Padma Shri’ in 2012, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, becoming only the 2nd female cricketer to receive the prestigious honor after Diana Edulji.
  7. When the BCCI awarded annual retainer contracts for female cricketers for the first time in 2015, Jhulan was among the 4 senior cricketers who were awarded central contracts in the highest category.
  8. In March 2022, Goswami became the first bowler in history to complete 250 wickets in women’s ODIs. She made this achievement while playing in her 199th ODI match.
  9. In 2018, Jhulan had announced her retirement from Women’s T20I matches.
  10. In January 2016, Jhulan was placed at #1 on the ICC Women’s ODI bowling rankings.
  11. In September 2022, Jhulan played her last International cricket match which was an ODI match against England at Lord’s.
  12. A film has been made about her life titled Chakda Xpress in which Anushka Sharma played her role. It was released on Netflix.
  13. Mumtaz Sorcar played the role of Goswami in the 2022 biopic Shabaash Mithu, which is on the life of woman cricketer Mithali Raj.
  14. In May 2023, she publicly criticized the food quality at Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai.
