Joey McIntyre Facts

  1. Joey got his name from St. Joseph and a family friend whose last name was Mulrey.
  2. He grew up in a religious Irish-Catholic family. His mother wanted him to become a priest.
  3. Joey served as an altar boy and sang in the church choir when he was 5 years old.
  4. As a kid, his ambition was to follow in his father’s footsteps and work as a bricklayer.
  5. After the initial 4 members were finalized for New Kids on the Block, Manager Maurice Starr decided to hire a Michael Jackson-like singer to complete the line-up. He finally settled on McIntyre, who was 12 years old at the time of his joining in 1985.
  6. Initially, Joey was bullied by the other band members who were all childhood friends. He joined the group as a replacement for Mark Wahlberg, who had left to pursue his own musical ambitions.
