  1. She was brought up in Delhi during the British Raj in India.
  2. Kamala spent her teenage years and ’20s residing and taking care of her daughter Indira at the Anand Bhavan.
  3. She was the oldest of 4 children born to Rajpati and Jawahar Mull.
  4. Kamala’s involvement with her husband started with his “Non-Cooperation” movement in 1921. She played a key role in leading various women groups and picketing shops that sold foreign clothes and liquor.
  5. It wasn’t until Pandit Nehru was arrested in October 1940, that Kamala began to grow as a public figure after taking her husband’s place to complete a speech that he was taken into custody for. Her brave move sparked a widespread stand by Indian women. Upon realization, Kamala was also arrested by British officials on 2 various occasions.
  6. In the past, Kamala had started a “Congress Dispensary” at her home, the Swaraj Bhawan.
  7. Kamala was only 36 years old when she passed away in Lausanne, Switzerland on February 28, 1936, while she was being treated due to her deteriorating health.
  8. Her hometown was in Old Delhi.
  9. Kamala is the grandmother of politician Rajiv Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi.
  10. In memory of her dedication and bravery, upon her death, the “Kamla Nehru Memorial Hospital” was started by Mahatma Gandhi.

  12. There is a road in Karachi, Pakistan that was named after her.
