Khalil Rountree Jr. Facts

1. When Khalil was about 2 years old, his father, while working as the tour manager for Boyz II Men (an American vocal harmony group), was shot and killed in an attempted robbery.
2. In his teenage years, he was part of a band and traveled across the United States. He used to smoke cigarettes around this time and was quite unhealthy. To lose weight, Khalil started getting trained in martial arts when he was about 20 years old. About a year later, in March 2011, he started his amateur mixed martial arts career.
3. By July 2013, he had amassed a 6-1 win-loss record, competing as a middleweight, in his amateur mixed martial arts career. In the very last of these 7 bouts, Khalil won the Tuff-N-Uff Amateur Middleweight Championship.
4. In December 2017, he lost a UFC bout against Michał Oleksiejczuk – via unanimous decision. However, in a bizarre turn of events, the result was later changed to a ‘No Contest’ after Michał tested positive for clomiphene, an anti-estrogenic substance.
5. In late 2018 and early 2019, Khalil temporarily shifted to Thailand to train in Muay Thai, a combat sport that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. This discipline is also known as the ‘Art of 8 Limbs’ as it is characterized by the combined use of a combatant’s fists, elbows, knees, and shins.
6. In September 2021, he defeated Modestas Bukauskas in a UFC bout via TKO (leg kick) in the 2nd round – after catching him with an oblique kick. This was the first time that the technique had been used to finish off a fight in the UFC.
7. Khalil enjoys moshing, an extreme style of dancing (usually performed to aggressive styles of live music) in which participants push/slam into each other in an area called the mosh pit.
8. He is also an ardent fan of Beatdown hardcore music, a subgenre of hardcore punk (a punk rock music genre and subculture that originated in the late 1970s) with prominent elements of heavy metal (a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s).
