Lillete Dubey is an Indian actress and theatre director who is best known for her work in films such as Monsoon Wedding (2001), Baghban (2003), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Bow Barracks Forever (2004), My Brother…Nikhil (2005), Pankh (2010), The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2012), The Lunchbox (2013), and 3 Days to Go (2019). She is also well recognized for her work in numerous TV and web series/serials such as Hum Log (1984), A Mouthful of Sky (1984), Just Mohabbat (1996), Raahein (1998), Apna Apna Style (2000), Piyaa Bina (2006), Akoori (2018), and Qubool Hai 2.0 (2021). Lillete had attended the Loreto Convent in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. She had later studied at the Rustom Boarding school in her hometown of Pune. She had then briefly attended the Carmel Convent School, a Catholic school in Delhi.

Lillete had completed her schooling at St. Mary’s School, Pune, which was founded in 1866 to cater to the education of the daughters of officers of the British Indian Army who were posted in Pune.

After her high school graduation, she studied English literature at Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR), a constituent college of the University of Delhi, a collegiate, public, central university in New Delhi. She had graduated from there with a Master of Arts degree.

She had attained her second master’s degree, in mass communications, from the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, an Indian media center of learning and civil service training institute for the Indian Information Service Cadre funded and promoted by the Government of India, in New Delhi.

They had first met when she was studying English literature at Lady Shri Ram College for Women and he was pursuing a master’s degree in economics from the Delhi School of Economics. Both institutions are constituent colleges of the University of Delhi. They had 2 daughters together named Ira Dubey (Actress) (b. August 1, 1984) and Neha Dubey (Psychotherapist, Actress). Lillete and Ravi were together until his death in May 2015, due to pancreatic cancer. Ravi was the youngest-ever general manager of the Taj Mansingh hotel and had risen through the ranks to become the senior vice-president of corporate communications at the Tata Group, India’s largest business conglomerate. He had quit the company in 2004.

  1. Soon after Lillete’s birth in Pune, her family had moved to Bikaner, Rajasthan, and later to Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. The family had briefly lived in Delhi and returned to Pune when she was in the 9th grade.
  2. As she was quite good at academics, her parents were intent on pushing her to pursue a degree in science. However, she had different interests and had to convince her parents quite a bit to allow her to study English literature.
  3. She had started her career with renowned theatre director/teacher Barry John in Delhi. She was one of the founding members of his group, the Theatre Action Group, in 1973.
  4. In 1991, she had set up her own company called The Primetime Theatre Company to promote original Indian writing. As of May 2022, she had directed more than 30 productions for the company.
  5. The 1995 play titled Dance Like a Man which was directed and produced by Lillete is one of the longest-running Indian plays in the English language. The play, where she was also the lead actress, had completed more than 650 shows across the world, including a 2-week off-Broadway run.
  6. At the 2008 Madrid International Film Festival, she won the ‘Best Actress’ award for her portrayal of the character of Emily Lobo in the film Bow Barracks Forever (2004).
  7. At the 2012 Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards, she won the ‘Best Actress’ award for her work in the play Adhe Adhure (2011).
  8. Her younger sister Lushin was named after the Russian aircraft Ilyushin. Her younger brother Patanjali aka Patu was named after the ancient sage Patanjali who is credited with the compilation of the Yoga Sutras, a collection of Sanskrit aphorisms on the theory and practice of Yoga.
