Lyudmyla Kichenok Facts

  1. In January 2015, Lyudmyla and her sister Nadiia became just the 2nd pair of twins – after the Czech pairing of Karolína Plíšková and Kristýna Plíšková – to have won a doubles title on the WTA Tour.
  2. The event was the Shenzhen Open and it was the first title triumph for both Lyudmyla and Nadiia on the WTA Tour. In the final of this particular tournament, the pair had survived a 5-0 deficit in the 2nd set tie-break of their eventual 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) win.
  3. In October 2015, Lyudmyla caused the biggest upset of the Tianjin Open when she defeated then-world number 8 and reigning US Open champion Flavia Pennetta in the first round – by a 6-3, 7-5 margin.
  4. It was her first win over a player ranked in the ‘Top 10’ of the official WTA singles rankings – a feat made even more special by the fact that she was ranked as low as world number 414 at that time. This remained the only win of her career, as of July 2023, over a player ranked in the ‘Top 10’ of the official WTA singles rankings.
  5. This happened because she drifted away from the singles format through the mid and late 2010s as her doubles career gained prominence – her peak singles ranking (world number 156) was achieved in July 2014 and she had slipped to a singles ranking of 1,014 by early July 2023.
  6. In November 2022, Lyudmyla reached the semi-final of the doubles event of the 2022 edition of the WTA Finals, an annual season-ending tournament conducted by the WTA that is reserved for players at the top of the official WTA rankings. This tournament has the largest prize money and ranking points after the Grand Slam tournaments.
