Makoto Shinkai Facts
- Makoto, soon after graduating from Chuo University in March 1996, joined Nihon Falcom Corporation, a Japanese video game developer that was founded in March 1981. It is one of the oldest active video game companies in the world.
- He started his career in the entertainment industry in 1998 when he wrote and animated 2 short films – The World Be Enclosed and Other Worlds. His passion for manga and anime started in middle school when he was first introduced to such content.
- Makoto shot to fame in 1999 when he wrote, produced, and animated a 5-minute short monochrome film titled She and Her Cat. The film won several awards. All this while, he was still working at Nihon Falcom Corporation – making video clips for games and working on graphic design.
- In May 2001, he quit that job – a few months after he was contacted by an organization called Manga Zoo that offered to give him a grant to turn his ideas into an anime series that they could sell.
- Due to the quality and popularity of his work over the years, he has often been hailed as ‘The New Miyazaki’. This is in reference to the comparisons that Japanese anime fans have drawn between Makoto and Hayao Miyazaki – a Japanese animator, filmmaker, and manga artist who is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished filmmakers in the history of animation.
- Some key and recurring elements in Makoto’s filmmaking are the use of weather as a prominent element, the presence of cat(s), and the exploration of feelings of longing that arise due to both distance and interpersonal hurdles.
- The asteroid (a minor planet that orbits within the inner solar system) 55222 Makotoshinkai is named after him.
