- He had been playing for Sri Lanka’s squad for the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup prior to making his Twenty20 debut.
- Matheesha was named to the SLC Greys‘ squad for the 2021 SLC Invitational T20 League in August 2021. On August 22, of that year, Pathirana made his debut for the SLC Greys’ 2021 SLC Invitational T20 League to the Twenty20.
- Matheesha was named to Sri Lanka’s team for the 2022 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup during their tour in the West Indies.
- He replaced Adam Milne by signing with the Chennai Super Kings, in April 2022, for the 2022 Indian Premier League. However, he made his debut with Gujarat Titans. During his debut, he took a wicket in the very first ball which made him the first Sri Lankan and ninth overall to achieve the feat in the Indian Premier League.
- Matheesha was named to Sri Lanka’s Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for their series against Australia in May 2022. However, he was ruled out due to an injury.
- He was considered to be a key member of the Chennai Super Kings team which won the IPL trophy in 2023. During the series, he picked up 19 wickets making him the youngest foreign player to win an IPL trophy.
