- He owns a dog named Mila.
- After the retirement of Daniel Vettori following the 2015 World Cup, Santner was named in the one-day squad for the tour of England. He was later drafted into the touring squad for the England tour to cover the absence of some players at the Indian Premier League.
- Mitchell made his One Day International debut at the Edgbaston during which he played 19 List A matches for Northern Districts.
- He became the first player in history to make a test debut in a Day-Night Test Match against Australia. At that time, he hit a boundary off the first ball of his Test career.
- In the 2016 World Twenty20, he won the man of the match award for his amazing performances which eventually brought his team to win by 47 runs.
- He shared the honor along with Jeetan Patel for being the first pair of spinners in history to kickoff an ODI in the first innings of 4th ODI vs South Africa in 2017.
- On January 16, 2018, he bowled Pakistani cricketer Fakhar Zaman with a carrom ball. During the same year, he was out of the Test series in a match against England after he suffered a knee injury which ruled him out for 6 to 9 months. Following his hiatus, his planned spell with Derbyshire and Indian Premier League had to be called off.
