Miyu Kato Facts
- Miyu began playing tennis when she was about 8 years old. The biggest achievement of her youth career was reaching the final of the 2011 Australian Open in the girls’ doubles format.
- Representing Japan, she won the ‘Bronze’ medal at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games in the women’s doubles event.
- On June 4, 2023, at the women’s doubles event of the 2023 French Open, she and her partner Aldila Sutjiadi had to forfeit their 3rd round match after Miyu accidentally hit a ball girl with a ball. She also had to forfeit the points and prize money that she had earned for her performance in the tournament until then.
- Miyu declared that she would appeal the supervisor’s decision and received overwhelming support from the fans and fellow players, both male and female, who felt that her disqualification was rather unfair – because of the accidental nature of the misdemeanor.
- Her opponents in that match, Sara Sorribes Tormo & Marie Bouzková, were lambasted by fans on social media as they had pushed the supervisor to disqualify Miyu and her partner. Fans were also irked by the fact that the duo did not seem to apologize to Miyu for their behavior.
- 4 days later, on June 8, 2023, she turned it all around by winning the mixed doubles event of the 2023 French Open – with her German partner Tim Pütz. This was the first title of Miyu’s career at a Grand Slam tournament (Australian Open / French Open / Wimbledon Championship / US Open). She took to Instagram to thank all those fans who had relentlessly supported her through her aforementioned disqualification in the women’s doubles event of this tournament.
