Noma Dumezweni Facts

  1. She had resided in Botswana, Kenya, and Uganda before shifting to England as a child. It was as a refugee that she had arrived in England, on May 17, 1977, first having lived in Felixstowe, Suffolk, and then moved to London.
  2. Dumezweni has disclosed that her character Hermione in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child taught her to be angry, in a good way. She has felt that Hermione’s fury has been carefully directed and displayed through love and strong feelings of loyalty, rather than bitterness. Noma herself had not known how that worked until she essayed the character, after which she realized that her true moments of anger were the result of her inability to figure out what she wanted to express and how she was feeling, and her struggle to put those across.
  3. Noma has stated that although she has loved playing Hermione with ease and confidence, she has been aware that she is the 2nd Hermione with Emma Watson being the original. Dumezweni has added that the two had met when Watson had come to see the show. They had both burst into tears and then hugged each other, and she has cherished the lovely, special moment that had felt the most powerful, too.
  4. Noma has always looked forward to meeting fans after the show, particularly women of color and young children. She has loved kids and their company and has been amazed at how there is the potential of the world in them.
