- He was brought up in Edison, New Jersey.
- During his teenage years, Rich would quietly sneak into Rutgers University’s weight room to use exercise equipment there.
- He began competing professionally at the 1984 World IFBB Amateur Championships Light-HeavyWeight where he attained 1st place.
- From 1985 to 1991, Rich competed in 7 IFBB Mr. Olympia contests of which he was runner-up in 1986, 1987, and 1988.
- Rich was inducted into the IFBB Hall of Fame in 2004.
- He was awarded the Muscle Beach Hall of Fame Award in 2011. Later, in 2013, he was given the Arnold Classic Lifetime Achievement Award.
- Rich was featured on the cover of the October 2011 issue of Iron Man.
- He founded his own supplement company, Gaspari Nutrition in 1997. However, the company was taken into an investigation after a client of his claimed that his company was spiking their products with a variety of steroids and/or their derivatives. Later, he filed for bankruptcy and sold the company.
