Ross Barkley has long been considered the next big attacking talent to emerge out of England. The former Everton manager, Roberto Martinez, has called him a blend of Michael Ballack and Paul Gascoigne. The English legend Frank Lampard has claimed that Barkley reminds him of young Wayne Rooney, England and Manchester United‘s leading goalscorer. After having burst on the scene with Everton, his progress was stalled by a couple of injuries and his contract battle with Everton which eventually led to his transfer to Chelsea. Ross Barkley Facts

  1. He joined the youth academy of Everton at the age of 11.
  2. He was all set to make his professional debut early in the 2010-11 season but he suffered a leg fracture after colliding with Liverpool‘s Andre Wisdom during an England under-19 match in October.
  3. He managed to recover from the fracture by the start of the pre-season training in 2011. He managed to impress Everton senior team players in the pre-season with club legend Tim Cahill calling Barkley the most talented footballer he had ever trained with.
  4. In December 2011, he signed a new contract with Everton and extended his stay at the club until 2016.
  5. In August 2013, he scored his first professional goal for Everton in the opening day match against Norwich City. The match ended in a 2-2 draw.
  6. In December 2013, he helped Everton defeat Swansea City by scoring a winner in a 2-1 win. His stunning free-kick led to his comparison with the Manchester United star, Wayne Rooney.
  7. The 2013-14 season proved to be his breakthrough season as he made 34 league appearances and scored 6 goals. He also helped his side secure a 5th-place finish in the league.
  8. In July 2014, he signed a 4-year contract extension with Everton. However, he couldn’t make a strong start to the season as he suffered a medial collateral ligament injury and couldn’t play until mid-October.
  9. In May 2017, he was given a warning by Everton manager Ronald Koeman to sign the contract extension or risk being sold by the club in the summer transfer window. In July, Koeman told the press that Barkley had informed him that he was going to leave the club.
  10. However, the club failed to sell him in the summer transfer window because of his hamstring injury. It was also claimed that he had intentionally avoided the transfer so that he could join the new club on the free in the following summer and get a hefty signing-on fee.
  11. In January 2018, Everton sold him to Chelsea with the London based club paying the transfer fee of £15 million. Barkley signed a 5 and a half years long contract with his new club.
  12. Just after his transfer to Chelsea, the Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, referred Barkley’s transfer to Merseyside Police after it was revealed that his agency had pocketed £7 million from the move. The police didn’t find any evidence of fraud.
  13. In October 2018, he scored his first professional goal for Chelsea in their 3-0 win over Southampton in a Premier League away match.
  14. He gave a proof of his renaissance under Maurizio Sarri’s tutelage at Chelsea by scoring an injury-time equalizer against Manchester United in October 2018.
