Sophie Ecclestone is an English professional cricketer who has represented her country in all 3 formats of the sport (Tests, ODIs, and T20Is), as a frontline spin bowler. In the English domestic circuit, she has played for her home county of Cheshire (2013–2014) as well as Lancashire Women (2015–Present) and North West Thunder (2020–Present) across all formats. In franchise-based T20 cricket, she has turned out for Lancashire Thunder (2016–2019) in the Women’s Cricket Super League (WCSL); and Trailblazers (2019–2020), and Supernovas (2022) in the Women’s T20 Challenge. She has also played for Manchester Originals (2021–Present) in The Hundred, a professional franchise 100-ball cricket tournament that was introduced by the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) as a new format of cricket that was played for the first time in July and August 2021.

Sophie Ecclestone Facts

1. Sophie, since she was a young child, used to play both cricket and soccer with her older brother James and her father. She often credits James with teaching her how to play both sports.
2. When she made her debut for the boys’ team of Alvanley Cricket Club, a local team in Helsby, the village where she was raised, James was one of her teammates. In 2022, the club made her a life member.
3. She rose through the ranks quickly in England’s domestic pathway and was in contention to be selected for the 2017 edition of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup. However, she was still only 17 years old and had another round of exams to go through before finishing school. She and her parents then decided that she would not play for England that summer. England went on to win the tournament, leaving Sophie with feelings of lament.
4. In December 2018, the ICC (International Cricket Council) honored her with the prestigious ‘Emerging Player of the Year’ award.
5. During the 2020 edition of the ICC Women’s World T20, she became the youngest woman to have taken 50 wickets in WT20I matches. She finished the tournament with 8 wickets and became the world’s number one ranked bowler in the WT20I format. Sophie was the first English bowler to hold that distinction since Anya Shrubsole in 2016.
6. In June 2021, in a test match against India, she conceded 206 runs in 64 overs across both innings. As of September 2022, these were the 2nd-highest number of runs conceded by any bowler in a women’s test match.
7. At the 2022 edition of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, she captured 21 wickets, falling just 2 short of Lyn Fullston’s all-time tournament record. In England’s semi-final match, against South Africa, she recorded her first 5-wicket haul in WODIs. Sophie’s dreams of winning the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, especially after the miss in 2017, were dashed though as Australia defeated England by 71 runs in the final to lift the trophy for a record-extending 7th time.
8. She once stated in an interview that after the end of her cricketing career, she would aim to attain a pilot’s license.
9. Sophie and her older brother James are lifelong supporters of the English professional soccer club Everton F.C.
